Good point above - and remember the 4 points of communication

Inform - Invite - Listen - Acknowledge.

Practise a conversation with anyone and it's funny how most of us only do 3 of them!

Identify the most annoying women in the room ...

Say " Shut the f*** up bitch"

As silence decends across the road, you have the opportunity to get your points and issues across

Well it was pretty much as everyone said it would be! Not something i would like to do again.

The role play was interesting. I had to deal with a hysterical woman employee who had crashed the company motor (non fault) and wanted to leave the job. My brief was to keep her. Interesting how initial reservation wears off after a few minutes and you become totally immersed in the situation.

Group exercise was a bit of a laugh - the five of us got on really well during the day and worked exceedingly well to complete the task.

After a while you realise that they are very capable of assessing you, so I just adopted the attitude of "WYSIWYG - take me or leave me"

Thanks again for all the input.

I attended one of these for Halfords years ago for a regional managers job. It was the biggest waste of time I have ever been on and was as described by others on here. It was an overnight stay followed by a full day of tasks role plays etc etc. I knew it was stupid when the head of the company told us all that you didn't need to know anything about cars to run Halfords At my last inteview of the day with him I was asked if I had any questions, after I had asked him about the company for five minuets where he told me a loss of IIRC 12 million for the last year was good I left. It is the only time I did not want the job after an interview. The HR department gave feedback next day and all the judges wanted me but the main man refused to work with me choosing an inside applicant. Oh how laughed when the losses continued unchecked and eventually it was sold of. If I was ever asked to attend another I would not as any company who has to go through this process has no clear idea of what type of person they want and listen to consultants too much. They peddle this type thing to companies who are looking for the next big thing.

So you`re still undecided then?

And IMO, you don`t need to know about cars to be a regional manager for Halfords. Why should you be the odd one out?

When it`s confirmed that I haven`t got the job, I`ll tell the story about how I ended up arranging a date with the hysterical woman (who was quite fit by the way). To clarify, I arranged the date during the role play with the ficticious person, not the assessor!

Sorry to hear that (if you really wanted that job).....
But IMHO a company that resorts to that sort of childish unproven and typically american psychobabble is NEVER worth working for!!!!

I think what has upset me more than anything is that their tests have "proved" I am no good as a manager. I know I am the right person for the job. It`s a real downer on my confidence.

An update..

Had my "feedback" telephone call today.

Told me that generally I was OK, but did not come over quite right at the interview. I told her that I had not had an interview in the last 20 years,so what did she expect.

Told her that in my opinion they had not recruited the right people for the job, instead they had recruited people who knew how to "play the game" at an interview. Told her that I felt cheated and that the interview was set up so that "failures" would succeed. By that I mean that someone who has gone for loads of interviews, but has not got the job should know what they are doing by now, and hence have the right answers to the questions.

Incidently, the job was for a HATO manager, and not one of the other applicants who were there for assessment had ever done any sort of roadside work!

As someone posted above, if theye base their recruitment on a load of psychbabble b*llshit, they are not really someone I want to work for.

rant over.

I've often wondered if you can charge 'loss of earnings' and 'wasted time' to the interviewers.

In your case towman...they had you for a whole day...if you add up preparation time - getting a haircut, dry-cleaning the suit, travelling expenses etc. then they owe you a few hundred pounds.

That's what a lot of agencies do. Fill up an interview with candidates who are total BS'ers who can hopefully earn them commission, whilst people like you who can do their job with their eyes closed don't get a look in.

In my experience, think who you'd like to work for, ring them up and ask to speak to their HR Manager/Director and state your case that you're bloody good at what you do.

If they've anything about them, they'll realise you've got confidence in you're ability and ask you to see them.

Go for it!
