I don't think I would say it out loud in public, but like some people have already said- it's used in a jokey 'Ali G' type way. No one can say it quite like Samuel L Jackson anyway.... with Eddie Murphy a close second LOL. J

So, are you saying that the "liberals" would sign up as concentration camp guards if nazis became the norm? Or just that "liberals" lack intelligence? And what is intelligent about following the herd? Especially if they are lemmings heading for a cliff? And did everyone believe in Einstein's Theories before he showed how smart he was and proved his intelligence by accepting the standard beliefs? |

stackmonkey said:Diesel ed, Why would you want to insult someone who is black / gay / female / muslim / disabled etc just because they are? It 's wrong to do so , just as it would be to insult the sterotypical 'white middle class male' just for being so. |
Where did I say that I wanted "to insult someone who is black / gay / female / muslim / disabled etc just because they are?" However, I am quite happy to insult someone who thinks it's OK to physically attack someone who uses a word which they decide has broken the rules that they have made up. Or physically deprive them of their liberty for so doing. Or divert supposedly scarce police resources to prosecuting people who use a word which they decide has broken the rules that they have made up with a view to physically depriving them of their liberty for so doing. Whilst little old ladies and frail kids are physically attacked, killed even. Regardless of their, or their attackers, colour, religion, culture, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sex, orientation, politics, or whatever. Whatever happened to the law protecting citizens from harm and allowing them to live their lives in peace? It now prevents them from so doing, in any sense of the word.

We can't even insult people by calling them nigger/ gay/ woman moslem/ fat/ crippled/ thick. What can we do to let off steam? Oh, I know, just go out and kill a male pensioner, or a schoolboy. So that's alright then. Did someone mention a caring sharing warm and wooly liberal "society"? |
How about finding a way of letting off steam that doesn't hurt other people? Just going out for a burn... |
That's what I love about "liberals" - nothing! The PC Police like to think that people who don't share their precious cultural views are living in the stone age. I suppose that makes them better than us as they have advanced to the bronze age. One day they will suss out irony and really start to develop.

I was always confused by this. There is an acceptance in adopting words that were part of a particular regime (in this case 'nigger' and 'negro') in modern times as a term of endearment, but only to the people who were actually oppressed. I believe the first real revelation of this was in tarantino's film 'pulp fiction' where the word 'nigger' is used consistantly in this way, with I think only 1 reference to the work 'negro' I found this incredible at the time, but it's accepted now. however, it seems only acceptable to use the work if you are infact black, and not white, which sort of implies that the acceptable useage is dependent on skin colour, which is, by definition racist. ??? My personal view on society if that born trouble maker scum will use any platform to in some way justify their ways. I don't think that there ARE football hooligans or racists or the other plethora of discriminatory violence. They are thugs, plain and simple, and they choose the best bandwagon at the time.

Sometimes, but I'd never say it to a black bloke as they would probably find it offensive(unless it was someone I knew well and I knew they wouldn't). Just like I'd never say 'rimjob' to a nun. It's all about timing, situation and context. Then again, I find it inapropriate to leave a bottle of vinegar and a salt grinder next to my fish tank in the kitchen in case the fish gets offended, maybe I'm just too sensitive sometimes. Pickled Piper said:Yawn. Here we go again. The word nigger is offensive to black people as it was a derogatory term used by whites in the colonial slavery days. It was also used to reinforce negative racial stereotypes. It is still offensive to black people if used by a white person. Yes, it's literal meaning derives from the word black, and yes, it's OK for one black person to call another a nigger because typically it is not being used to subjagate or intentionally to offend. Let me give you another example; Bitch. It is offensive to women as it is a derogatory term used by men, often to reinforce negative stereotypes. It's literal meaning is a description of a female canine. Yes it's OK for one woman to call another a bitch as quite often it's done in a playful sense and not intentionally to subjagate or offend. Yes, words can be offensive and insulting. Yes, common usage can be quite different from literal meaning. Yes, a word can be more or less offensive depending on who is using it and also where or when it is used. pp |
If I may say so; very well put. Some of the underlying attitudes on this thread have confirmed to me that this country remains deeply racist. Shame.

Your answer is as predictable as it is contemptable.

In a word: No, I don't use the word. Pity about Guy Gibson's dog "Nigger" though wasn't it? Run over has I recall from the film. What about I called it "Blackie" then, that's a popular name? Woof!

Where I lived as a youngster some 25 years ago there was dog called "Darkie" who was more or less our whole estates dog, if your mates didn'want to come out to play, there was always the dog to play with. I'm positive it wasn't in the slightest bit racist as Norn Iron had almost no ethnic minorities living there(generalising here) and I certainly wasn't aware of it. I know that it would be unacceptable to have the dog named that now, as people are now sensitised to the potential faux pas/offence it could now cause as there are now quite a few more people from different ethnic backgrounds living in Northern Ireland. I think eventually the word "nigger" will be rehabilitated very much in the mode of Samuel L Jackson (although personally I think we are talking decades here), but so long as it can be used as a term of hatred and offence or misconstrued as that, its probably best to steer clear of using it. Just my 2p

The PC police haven't half got this one wrong. By calling time on "the N word", but leaving such terms as frog, jock, paddy and yank, they are sending out the message that it's bad to be black, but we shouldn't mention it. George Orwell tried to warn us about the dangers of trying to control thinking by altering the language. (The Newspeak Dictionary in 1984) He was double plus right. If we want racial integration we have to learn to celebrate the equality across races AND the differences between races. Pretending we're all the same isn't going to work when we can see we're different. The feminists made the same mistake. They made themselves more like men instead of becoming equal and celebrating the differences. Equality and similarity are NOT the same thing!

Very well put safe speed. The habit of applying very narrow view points to large section of society is nothing new. Take people as you find them and treat them as you would like to be treated. When asked if i like french people i responded by saying i hadn't met them all yet!
