The V8 is the Mountune RST unit from Revolve (formerly Rousch UK) I believe.

It's not that short of an F1 engine without the benefit of a team of peope to run it and rebuilds every 1000 miles. I'd imagine Ariel will be FI, which can be built a lot stronger as you don't need lightweight parts to get super high RPM.

Yeah but fuel cells are quite light for their power capacity; this is a 'future tech' atom, remember. I agree that the chances of an ariel atom carting round a pile of Li-Po/Li-Ion batteries seems unlikely. Agree on the weight issue. In RC cars, LiPo is now the way forward instead of conventional cells and you have to add so much more lead weights to get up to weight. The new technology coming is far better, quicker to charge and lighter than anyone would currently imagine. I must say, congratulations on Ariel for coming out and supporting the future of the motor car without conventional petrol engines. At last, along with Lotus too, that we are starting to get serious about this issue. Face facts, the petrol powered car as we know it is on it's way out. The future is cell powered. What those cells will be is the big question and it's fasinating to see how these technology develops, and yes, these new cars will be faster, better handling and more reliable than any petrol car available today. I just wish I was born now as I might miss out on some of the stunning new cars that will be rolling out of factories in 30-50years time...

Alex_L said: "Saunders believes the future of the car industry lies away from the combustion engine" does that mean we'll be called "ElectroHeads"? Sounds geeky. Its good that small company like this is looking into the far future, though. Sertainly more forward facing than some of bigger manufacturers.
Does anyone know what engines are used in the V8? Is it the Yamaha R1 * 2? Yes its a 40 valve motor based on the R1 engine made by Russell Savory and only weighs 90Kg, sounds epic. I really cant see the point of an electric Atom, why? The technology is going nowhere until there is a vast improvement in battery technology.

Now that Daimler have taken a 10% stake in Tesla, maybe these cars are the way of the future... I'd agree, the batteries are currently useless, but they're pumping a lot of time and energy into this. It won't be long before petrol cars are a thing of the past, mark my words! Check out this article for more info: http://motoring.sky.com/news/daimler-takes-10-stak...

Good to see in these times that a company is pushing ahead with the deveolpment of something as insane as a 500bhp V8 in something like the Atom.
That will be an astonishing car.

THUNK! That's the sound of a lightweight sportscar from Somerset being hitched to the back of the predictable eco-bandwagon. Somebody please explain why you would handicap a car that's sole purpose is to deliver thrilling driving experiences and track-fun (and spends 99% of its time in a garage by weighing it down with batteries and a heavy, eco-guilt-ridden conscience?

"25 miles range under racing conditions" The electric Le Mans car on the PH news the other day has got a lot of work to do if they want to be even remotely competitive! A quick battery swap isn't going to balance against that kind of mileage, no matter how quick it is.

I'd love to see a race between the V8 Atom and the V8 Caterham Levante. Both with a 100bhp per tonne!!!! Reckon they'll have the same engine?
