GLX spec didn't get an awful lot, though; "sporty" seats, a rev counter and a red stripe down the side, IIRC! I didn't have any complaints about how it handled (and at the time I lived in the Lake District, so it got plenty of b-road thrashage) but the interior build quality and materials were shocking.

Merc A class. I didn't expect much from it, and it was dire. Crap in just about every aspect. The worst modern car I've ever driven. I can't believe MB could sell such an inadequate car.
Clio 197 was very disappointing - worse than a 182 in just about every respect.

I used to dream about having them!! Can certainly vouch for the lack of quality. My radio certainly lacked it, just an AM/LW radio with no tape deck and no FM! Thank you to the stupid woman who rear ended us and wrote it off!!

OK, it wasn't surprising.. it was just rubbish.. slinky last year said: Good god Ford... what were you thinking.. Woke up this morning at the parents house as we're house sitting (they're in Canada seeing my new nephew) and saw the frost.. Got my pick of vehicles, Defender 90, Lupo, Fusion... Think to myself, I'll take the fusion, it's got a quick clear heated windscreen, that'll make my life nice and easy.. I wish i'd frozen my arse off in the Landy... that car is a crock of s**t!! Steering feel, what steering feel? Pedals, just levers, no feedback what-so-ever, accelerator just creates a little more noise and not much else, I really struggled to get past a cyclist! Windscreen, yes the heated windscreen is great but if I wanted to drive from behind a mesh, I'd've warn a bridal veil to drive in... nightime is just horrible. Wheelspin.. yes, it spun the wheels, at every fecking junction no matter what I did (ok, so I could have just gently eased out the clutch then thought about the throttle, but I'm getting onto main roads here!!) Body roll, oh my s t.. not even funny.. Dad, whatever made you buy this car?? you are officially a retired motoring numpty! btw, I found the fog light switch, it works for both off and on!!! GAH!!

Oh my word, peugeot did an amazing job with the 306 because the first gen non GTI 309 was terrible, quality terrible handled like a jelly. Maybe you got a bad one; I had a 309 GLX and the ride and handling were brilliant. They rolled, like all old-school French cars, but they also gripped and steered on the throttle. Mine was an 86 D reg, think they might have had a makeover in 88 or 89 and improved, was yours post makeover?? Right, my turn. I'm sorry but I am going to have to say the much vaunted Fabia vRS which I owned for 20,000 miles. It wasnt a bad car, quite the opposite, but it just wasnt a fun car IMO. There was no fun to be had from thrashing it, which to me goes against the whole ethos of a hot hatch. It also felt every kg of its 1,315 kg kerb weight, which is monsterously heavy for such a small car. Brakes were absolute cack. Grippy, but wallowy handling. It felt like driving a boat. Mazda MX-5 Mk2. I drove a 1.8 model and I had to actually ask the salesman if it really was a 1.8 because it was so underpowered it was actually quite laughable. The Clio 182 I had at the time felt like it had twice as much power. I can imagine it could be good with a blower. Toyota MR2 Mk3. Pretty much for the same reason as the MX-5, it was extremely slow. It was faster than the MX-5 though, but the engine was bland and soulless. Why oh why didnt Toyota put the T-Sport 190 lump in, this would have made the car a real Elise beater. Hyundai Coupe V6 Mk3. Very pretty, but the interior was hideously low rent, and engine note was muted (shame), and to be honest the drive was poor too. Felt like a barge and was horrifically slow. Seat Ibiza Cupra 1.8T. What a bag of s te. Poor handling, and a really, really boring engine. I would rather have the diesel. The 1.8T VAG lump must qualify as being one of the most bland, characterless engines in existence. Felt slow as well considering it was meant to have 180 bhp in a relatively light car.

Having driven over 5000 cars now some of them were utterly utterly s t but somehow I managed to find amusing aspects to all of them, from the completely buggered original mini whose aftermarket mahogany look dash fell off as I passed into 3 figures to the CityRover who would cock an inside wheel when going around roundabouts with gusto to the Agila without even an RDS radio, poverty spec special which made me look like noddy driving.

dern said: Forgot one... 1.8 mx5, the first shape... what are you guys on, gay pills? Dull, dull, dull. Trouble with them cars is, the UK importers were often bringing them in on steel wheels and then fitted cheap, heavy 15's to them. Mine suffered this. And also the car has fully adjustable suspension, which is a mixed blessing 'cos until you go and get it checked, you never know whats underneath you. Mine too was dull and crap, but by fitting it with proper Mazda 14's, and having the geo done (it was well out) the car was utterly transformed. The curious thing was though, that the car was 6 or 7 years old by that point, so all its previous owners (and no doubt countless other owners) would obviously feel they've driven an MX5 and not liked it, yet they'd never ever driven a properly sorted (ie in proper standard spec) one, and so would have completekly the wrong opinion. As standard, i've been able to mix with Elises at Donington. When Autocar decided a few years back that the MX5 was the best handling car in Brtiain (or somesuch accolade), the following year it came 12th. From what was written i felt sure it was because of nothing more than a change of wheels, that's all. Landy Andy said: A brand new Honda Jazz courtesy car in lime green and just 7 miles on the clock when we picked it up (Not many more when we took it back, it wasn't the sort of car you wanted to drive). Ignoring the colour, I expected it to be OK as the press raved about it. It was absolutely awful. The lack of power was just dangerous, especially when attempting to overtake (we struggled to get past a tractor on a long, straight stretch). In town it's supposed to excel, but we were just too embarrassed to notice if it was any good. Old people seemed to love it though, we had two visits from elderly neighbours wanting our opinion of it during the day or two it was on our drive. I'll let the photo explain why I chose to work 2 miles to school in the rain rather than get a lift... Funnily enough, a mate who also drives this really likes his wifes Jazz and usually drives it in preference to his 330d.

Blasted thing was so damn unreliable I'd book a slot in a suitable garage in advance before even contemplating a journey of more than 200 miles. So awful it would be far less embarrassing to be seen on one of Ken's Bendy-Buses! I've learned my lesson the hard way, ditched Italian Flop AND the Oyster Card, and now stick with Brits with big American hearts... Must have had a bad one - freind of mine has a QV & he's done 7 or 8 trips round Europe in it at 3K+ miles a time & its never let him down that I know if.

I'm going to go against the grain here probably, and say the Mk2 Focus ST. Dull styling, inside and out, and not very nice to actually drive. In addition to that, the Fiesta ST. Even more boring! But then I drive a Vauxhall...

I recall when I was younger I got to drive the Boss's Rover 3500 SD1. MY mouth went dry, my lips trembled but it was a pile of sh*t from the appalling over-assisted steering to the roll that would have made the Titanic seem like a sports car.
Never really got the Mk 1 Scirocco either.
To be brutally honest, the Mk II Cortina 1600E was pretty poor as well.

fourwheelsteer said: It is a close run thing between and E30 BMW 325i auto The BMW I hoped would be a pleasantly sporting saloon with a musical engine and good steering and handling. The steering was the greatest dissappointment; slow to respond, non-linear in weighting and action. The steering was sufficiently off putting that I didn't want to see if the handling was any good. Don't try an E30 with the factory manual rack in that case - it's even slower than the power one....you need armfuls of lock to negotiate a roundabout!
