PORSCHE
It looks like the Germans have stolen the show in Paris. Amongst the hype surrounding the much previewed Mini, Porsche managed to wheel in a completely new supercar concept.

Hints of Ferrari in the design.

The 'sports car study' named Carrera GT (how's about a new name Dr Porsche?) is based on much of the racing experience that Porsche have gained over the years. Recent years have seen a huge number of cars competing at various levels and providing the valuable data for future developments.

Fitted with a monstrous six litre V10 engine, Porsche claim it would produce 558 bhp and 444 lb/ft of torque. This tree-stump pulling engine will propel the GT to 60mph in less than four seconds and on to 204mph. Built with carbon fibre the GT weighs in at 1250kg.

Decisions regarding production of the car will be made in 2003. It's likely that the car would be engineered to suit US markets, a sector neglected by their previous limited edition supercars.

BMW
Probably giving some more clues as to the styling of the forthcoming six series, BMW showed the BMW Z9 convertible. The drop top uses a carbon fibre body atop a steel chassis to provide high levels of rigidity for a convertible. Power is supplied by BMW's impressive 4.4 litre V8.

Rather than adopt the retro interior of the Z8, the Z9 uses 'iDrive', a high tech interface to replace the traditional knobs and buttons on conventional dashboards. In BMW-speak that's "a new definition of driver-oriented ergonomics!"

BMW have added up all the potentional toys we need in the cockpit these days and they reckon with up to 700 different control functions now being conceivable, any conventional arrangement would lead to an unmanageable number of knobs. So rather than building four foot high dashboards, they're putting their money on intelligent controls and displays that change according to the conditions. Let's hope navigating their menu systems doesn't distract from the chore of looking where you're going...

VOLVO
Coupled with the launch of their latest saloon in Paris, Volvo have unveiled a 300bhp concept car based on the S60.

The new Volvo S60 is the sportiest and most dynamic Volvo sedan ever. In parallel with the development of the more regular roadgoing S60 models, a team of engineers and designers have worked on a concept study to identify and test technical solutions and a design structure that will support a feasible high-performance model.

Fitted with additional aerodynamic aids and 19" BBS magnesium wheels it takes on a sporty image unlike its staid sibling.
